HWS Group – Successful AWS migration
Overview: The HWS Group took over the migration of the SQL Server 2012 databases on end-of-life servers. The customer wanted a modern, scalable platform and opted for AWS.

Customer feedback: "Whether onsite, offsite or nearshore, the experts from HWS always keep pace with our systems. Cooperative and competent."Director Service Management
challenge
The customer, which operates a highly transactional application, was faced with the challenge that its SQL Server 2012 databases were running on end-of-life servers. This impacted the security and reliability of the applications and led to performance bottlenecks and higher maintenance costs. To improve database performance and reduce vulnerability to outages, the customer needed to migrate to a modern, scalable platform. The challenge was to modernise the business-critical applications without causing extended downtime during the migration process.
Analyse
The HWS Gruppe analysed the existing SQL Server 2012 databases and identified the AWS Cloud as the ideal platform for the migration. The aim was to migrate the databases to AWS RDS SQL Server 2019 to improve performance, increase scalability and reduce maintenance costs. A solution was developed that utilised the AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) with Change Data Capture (CDC) to ensure a virtually uninterrupted data migration. This ensured that the customer’s highly transactional application could continue to operate throughout the migration process.
Realisation
The HWS cloud architecture team created a detailed migration plan that included the use of AWS DMS with CDC to perform the database migration seamlessly and in near real-time. This technology allowed the migration to take place without significant business disruption as data was continuously synchronised between the old and new databases. At the same time, the infrastructure was designed to fully utilise the benefits of the AWS Cloud, such as increased scalability and reduced management complexity. The project was successfully completed within a tight schedule of two months.
Benefits for the customer
The customer benefited from several key advantages of the migration. The performance of the highly transactional application improved significantly after the migration, which had a positive impact on the user experience. Thanks to the AWS RDS environment, the customer was able to flexibly scale the database resources and respond to changing business requirements. The administrative effort was significantly reduced thanks to the automation of many administrative tasks. Of particular value to the customer was the minimised downtime during the migration, which was ensured by using DMS with CDC. The customer was extremely satisfied with the fast, trouble-free implementation and the comprehensive support provided by the HWS Group.
