challenge
Semikron-Danfoss, a leading global manufacturer of power electronics, was seeking to comprehensively modernise its network infrastructure. In addition, the company was dissatisfied with the communication and response times of its previous service provider and was looking for a new partner for the maintenance service that could guarantee rapid problem resolution and continuous 24/7 operational readiness. The aim was to significantly reduce the risk of network outages and thus ensure reliable, stable operation.
analysis
Our team carried out a comprehensive analysis of the existing network infrastructure in the building services in order to identify weak points. This showed that the existing technology no longer met current performance requirements and that there was potential for optimising the latest security technologies. The existing components had limited capacity, which led to performance bottlenecks and affected the efficiency of operational processes. In addition, individual network areas posed security risks because they no longer met modern standards and thus represented potential points of attack. Another important aspect was the lack of redundancy, which meant that there was no protection against irregularities. Furthermore, a non-uniform infrastructure with different manufacturers and technologies made network maintenance and scalability more difficult. To ensure a smooth modernisation, it was crucial to gradually migrate the manufacturers of the building technology to the new network ring. This was the only way to ensure a seamless integration and to minimise service interruptions. These findings formed the basis for the subsequent redesign of the network infrastructure.
Umsetzung
Based on the results of the analysis, HWS drew up a plan for the redesign of the home network. In close cooperation with the customer, we modernised the network for maximum performance, security and sustainability. This involved installing 12 central Cisco switches in a ring topology to ensure a fail-safe architecture. Additional DIN rail switches optimised the connection of systems and control devices. A FortiGate firewall in an HA cluster protects the internet connection and controls the routing between the subnets, while VLAN segmentation further strengthens network security. VPN access was implemented to facilitate maintenance and support. After successful implementation, HWS took over operation of the network as part of a 24/7 managed service with defined service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure continuous, smooth operation. The agreed response time of one hour, no matter what time of day, was significantly undercut by the HWS Gruppe. This ensured an immediate response to change requests and helped to ensure that operations could continue without interruption. The modernisation of the network infrastructure has provided Semikron-Danfoss with tangible benefits. Read more about the benefits on the next page.
Benefits for the customer:
By modernising its network infrastructure and introducing a structured maintenance service, Semikron-Danfoss has been able to achieve significant improvements in redundancy and security. Thanks to improved scalability, the company can now easily integrate new systems and manufacturers into the network without the risk of incompatibilities or performance issues. The rapid response times of the 24/7 managed service have also helped to ensure that problems are detected and resolved early, before they can cause critical disruptions. The positive effects are also noticeable from an employee perspective: according to feedback from the technical team, network outages have significantly reduced their workload and smoother operations have freed up more time for strategic IT projects.
