Dedicated Partition for Full Data Isolation
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud operates on a completely separate partition, not connected to the AWS global backbone. This ensures that data, metadata, and traffic remain within Europe. For example, if an EC2 instance in ESC communicates with one in Frankfurt, traffic will not traverse the global backbone.
Sovereign Cost Calculator
A dedicated cost calculator for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is expected by the end of this year, supporting cost estimation for sovereignty-aligned workloads.

How Does ESC Differ from Existing EU Regions?
Existing EU regions are sovereign by design but still part of the global AWS infrastructure. In contrast, ESC is a fully dedicated and independent environment, built, operated, and governed entirely within Europe.
Is a New Landing Zone Required?
Yes. Customers will need to deploy a new landing zone within the AWS Sovereign Cloud, ideally managed through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for consistency and automation.
Will ESC Maintain Compliance Certifications?
Yes. ESC will maintain certifications such as ISO/IEC 27001:2013, SOC 1/2/3, and BSI C5 attestation, regularly validated by independent auditors.
Does ESC Use the AWS Global Backbone?
No. ESC is a completely separate network partition, independent of the AWS global backbone.
