AWS Interconnect: The Bridge for Your Multicloud Strategy

AWS Interconnect is the new standard for fast, secure, and fully managed connectivity between AWS and other cloud providers such as Google Cloud. The service enables organizations to build multi-cloud architectures without complex router configurations or manual networking processes.

1. What Is AWS Interconnect?

Managing multiple clouds often leads to unnecessary networking complexity. AWS Interconnect solves this challenge by providing direct, encrypted, high-speed connections between AWS workloads and other public clouds. This allows teams to focus on applications rather than connectivity management.

2. What AWS Interconnect Offers

With AWS Interconnect, there is no need for physical or virtual routers between clouds. You simply select:

  • Your AWS source region
  • The target cloud provider (e.g., Google Cloud)
  • The required network capacity

AWS and the partner cloud then provision a redundant, automatically configured connection within minutes—ready for immediate use.

The service was introduced at re:Invent 2025 and currently provides free 1 Gbps preview connections to Google Cloud. Once generally available, additional bandwidth options suitable for production workloads will be accessible.

3. Benefits of AWS Interconnect

✔ Simplified Multicloud Networking

All traffic flows through the global AWS backbone and is routed directly to the target provider—eliminating local network devices or virtual routers.

✔ Fast Provisioning & Flexible Scaling

New connections can be set up in minutes. After general availability, bandwidth adjustments can be made easily.

✔ Fully Managed Service

AWS and the partner cloud manage all underlying infrastructure, ensuring high reliability with minimal operational overhead.

✔ Regional Availability

During the preview phase, AWS Interconnect supports the following regions:

  • US East (Northern Virginia) – Google Cloud Northern Virginia
  • US West (Northern California) – Google Cloud Los Angeles
  • US West (Oregon) – Google Cloud Oregon
  • Europe (London) – Google Cloud London
  • Europe (Frankfurt) – Google Cloud Frankfurt

4. How AWS Interconnect Works

AWS Interconnect deploys connections across multiple devices in at least two independent facilities. All traffic is encrypted using MACsec (IEEE 802.1AE) to ensure secure communication.

Core Components

  • Multicloud Interconnect: The provisioned network capacity between AWS and another cloud.
  • Attachment Points: AWS uses Direct Connect Gateways, while Google Cloud uses Cloud Routers.
  • Create & Accept Flow: A connection is created in one cloud and accepted in the other using an activation key.

Compatible with AWS Networking Services

  • Transit Gateway: A regional network hub connectable through Direct Connect Gateways.
  • AWS Cloud WAN: A global network service that can reach any connection attached to the same Direct Connect Gateway.

Monitoring & Metrics

  • CloudWatch Probes: Monitor latency and packet loss.
  • Bandwidth Metrics: Track utilization to optimize capacity and prevent congestion.

5. Getting Started with AWS Interconnect

Plan Your Architecture

  • Select Virtual Private Gateway, Transit Gateway, or Cloud WAN.
  • Verify IP address assignments.
  • Prepare a Direct Connect Gateway.

Create the Interconnect

In the AWS Console, you select:

  • Regions
  • Bandwidth
  • Attachment points
  • Google Cloud Project ID

AWS generates an activation key, which completes the connection setup in Google Cloud.

Activate the Interconnect in Google Cloud

  • Enter the activation key
  • Assign a name
  • Connect it to a Direct Connect Gateway

Testing Preview Connections

  • Set up the free 1 Gbps preview connection
  • Test traffic between AWS VPC and Google Cloud VPC
  • Monitor performance using CloudWatch metrics

Note: Preview connections are intended for testing only and are not suitable for production environments.
